GUWAHATI: The academic calendar, published by the Assam State School Education Board (ASSEB) (Div-I) for the new academic session 2025-26 for High Schools and Higher Secondary Schools (excluding the +2 stage), includes instructions for schools to complete academic planning before the commencement of the academic session. The academic calendar has been planned to maximize the working hours of schools. According to the instructions, schools concerned will have to complete their academic planning before the commencement of the academic session.

The classes in the schools for Class IX and X will be held regularly from 9 am to 3.25 pm, except for Saturdays. There will be two recess periods—from 10.40 am to 10.50 am and again from 12.45 pm to 1.45 pm.

Significantly, the summer vacation for the new academic year will last from July 1 to July 31. The academic calendar also specifies how the students should be taught in school and how exams will be held. Regarding the preparation of a subject-wise work schedule for the year, the academic calendar specifies that teachers will prepare the subject-wise work schedule. They are instructed to prepare their daily teaching plan before teaching in their class. The course for the year will have to be divided into 2 (two) Unit Tests, a Half Yearly and an Annual/Revisionary Examination. Of the two unit tests, one unit test is to be held before the half-yearly examination, and another unit test is to be held after the half-yearly examination. A revisionary test for Class X covering the whole course will be held in the month of January, and the Class IX Annual Exam will be held in the month of February/March 2026. The Head of the Institution (HOI) has to supervise the preparation of the schedule.

The schools are also instructed to hold diagnostic tests in English and Mathematics for all class IX students to identify weak students and undertake remedial classes at the beginning of the academic session.

All schools have to maintain records of Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) for every individual student in the school, i.e., records of Unit Tests, Half Yearly and Annual Bastion.

The academic calendar also states that the constitution of sub-committees is essential, with an academic sub-committee to deal with academic matters such as the preparation of the school routine, as well as guiding, monitoring, preparing and implementing the work schedule of teachers, and guiding teachers on matters related to curriculum, syllabus and textbooks, etc.

An Examination Sub-committee will deal with planning and holding of examinations, declaration of results, online registration of class IX students, online filling up of examination forms, etc. A CCE sub-committee has to be formed to deal with the implementation and monitoring of the CCE scheme and the formats of School Evaluation Record Cards (SERC).

Direction Plan for Class IX students during the summer vacation: Students are to do a minimum of one of the following during Vacation— prepare a list of flora & fauna in the locality and also find their scientific names; make a visit to a place of historical/social/cultural/scientific/industrial importance and prepare a report on its importance/significance; go through at least 2 good books and prepare notes on each of the books; prepare a note on two renowned mathematicians/scientists & their contributions; and/or prepare a report on the student’s town/village/city. Also, as to why the native place of a student is a place of importance, send it to the newspaper.

Regarding activities for Class X, teachers will have to supply a set of questions on each subject to students. Questions from all the chapters completed to date will be included in the set of questions. Students will answer them at home under supervision of parents/guardians as if they were sitting for their exams at their home.

At the end of the summer vacation, parents will hand over the answer booklet to the teacher, who will check all the answers to the questions and give feedback on the performance to the parents/guardians of their wards.

On a date in the middle of the summer vacation, teachers will sit in on a discussion and give necessary advice to answer the tough questions for each student.

It is also stated that there will be an Activities and Observance Day in every month of the academic year, with different activities having special significance for each particular month.
