Guwahati: In the last month of the year just ended, the highest prices were fetched by CTC tea produced by Bought Leaf Factories (BLFs) in Lakhimpur district, with the price going up to Rs 211.51 per kg on average in tea auctions.
However, the prices garnered were lower in comparison to those in the earlier month of November 2024, when tea manufactured by BLFs in Dhemaji district raked in an average of Rs 245.51 per kg.
This was evident from data contained in a Tea Board of India report on district-wise average prices of tea produced by BLF factories for the month of December 2024.
According to the information from the Tea Board, tea manufactured by BLFs in the Lakhimpur district raked in Rs 211.51 per kg, on average. The second-highest prices were fetched by BLFs in the Sivasagar district, with the price of Rs 189.67 per kg. BLFs in Cachar district fetched the third-highest price of Rs 188.12 per kg.
The tea prices realized by other districts in the state (in alphabetical order) are as follows: Biswanath Chariali with Rs 162.61 per kg; Bongaigaon Rs 187.52; Darrang Rs 178.43; Dhemaji Rs 171.72; Dhubri Rs 163.07; Dibrugarh Rs 188.04; Goalpara Rs 155.65; Golaghat Rs 152.08; Jorhat Rs 179.09; Karbi Anglong Rs 179.97; Karimganj Rs 140; Kokrajhar Rs 138.80; Nagaon Rs 163.93; Sonitpur Rs 165.09; Tinsukia Rs 159.60; and Udalguri Rs 176.99.
BLFs in the Changlang district in the neighbouring state of Arunachal Pradesh fetched Rs 155, with those in the West Siang district selling tea at Rs 141.55 per kg on average.
Significantly, Assam tea is famous globally for its distinctive, strong, brisk, and full-bodied characteristics.
It should also be noted that, generally, BLFs are not known to own tea gardens but manufacture tea from green leaf sourced from small tea growers.
