GUWAHATI: The State Cabinet took a slew of important decisions, including indigenous status to five Muslim communities, approval of the vehicle scrapping policy and state data policy, hiking the remuneration of office-bearers of local bodies, etc.

Briefing the media today, ministers Keshab Mahanta and Jayanta Malla Baruah said that the Cabinet decided to provide 'Assamese indigenous Muslim status' to the Gorias, Morias, Desis, Jollahs and the Syeds.

They said that the Cabinet decided to pay Rs 16,000 grants to each student who passed HSLC in the first division. A total of 22,565 students will get the grant instead of the Anundaram Barua Award under which students got laptops.

Mahanta said, "The Cabinet approved the vehicle scrapping policy. In the absence of this, the state has no policy on scrapping old and damaged vehicles. Under this policy, all old and damaged vehicles will have scrapping and recycling facilities. Over 15-year-old government vehicles, old vehicles without fitness certificates, damaged vehicles, etc., will be scrapped. People can also scrap their old vehicles voluntarily. The scrap facility centres will issue certificates to ensure the owners get concessions while buying new vehicles." He further said, "The Cabinet also approved Assam State Data Policy that includes all data of various departments. The new database will be with the IT Department, and the Chief Secretary will head a committee to monitor the implementation of the policy."

The Cabinet also decided to hike the remuneration of chairpersons, vice-chairpersons and members of all local bodies. "From now, they will get Rs 15,000, Rs 12,000 and Rs 10,000 per month respectively," Mahanta said.

Baruah acknowledged all persons responsible for setting up NESC at Guwahati and affirmed that this premier institute would help the north-eastern region move ahead towards providing affordable and high-quality technical and vocational education training in Northeast India.

Earlier in the day, the Minister from Singapore went to Sualkuchi and interacted with the local weavers and artisans. He visited an exhibition showcasing the local silk products there. He was also at IIT-Guwahati at a programme where Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Education Minister Ranoj Pegu were present.
