Assam: Construction process of Rs 201-crore Kamakhya ropeway project begins

Guwahati: As part of the proposal for the development of ropeway projects in the Northeast, the National Highways Logistics Management Ltd (NHLML) has decided to construct a ropeway from Kamakhya Railway Station to Kamakhya Temple in Guwahati. The proposed length of the ropeway is 1.43 km.

The NHLML has now issued an invitation of bids for the development, operation and maintenance of the ropeway project from Kamakhya Railway Station to Kamakhya Temple in Design, Build, Finance, Operate, and Transfer (DBFOT) mode.

Coincidentally, the invitation of bids was issued on June 24, 2025, at a time when the annual Ambubachi Mela at Kamakhya Temple, which attracts lakhs of devotees from across the country and beyond, was underway.

It should be mentioned here that the National Highways Logistics Management Limited (NHLML) is a 100% owned company of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), which operates under the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH).

According to the tender document, the total project cost of the Kamakhya Ropeway is Rs 201.52 crore. Earlier also, an invitation of bids for the ropeway project connecting Kamakhya Railway Station to Kamakhya Temple in Guwahati was issued by NHLML.

In order to boost the ropeway infrastructure in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, the NHLML invited bids on April 5, 2025, for the preparation of detailed project reports for 5 projects in the two states. The projects are, briefly, the Ganganagar Part-VII to Bhuban Pahar Mahadev Temple in the Cachar district (tentative length 2.78 km), Jatinga Bird Watching Tower to Hempeupet Peak in the Dima Hasao district (3.50 km), Agnigarh Pahar to Bhairabi Mandir at Tezpur in the Sonitpur district (1.80 km), Khanapara to Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati (24 km) and a ropeway project at Parshuram in Arunachal Pradesh (with a tentative length of 1.85 km).
