Guwahati: The Gauhati High Court on Thursday paved the way for the holding of the Panchayat elections in the state after it 'stayed' the earlier stay order on the polls in panchayat areas covered by the nine writ petitions. The Assam government had appealed against the single judge bench's order before a division bench of the HC, and relief was granted today by the division bench in holding the election.

The HC, on January 10, had given its assent for the holding of Panchayat elections in the state, barring the Panchayat areas covered by nine pending litigations. In today's order, the division bench stated that the cases related to the nine petitions would continue but imposed a stay order on them to facilitate the holding of the elections. The case will be heard next on February 6, 2025.

The single-judge bench of Justice Soumitra Saikia, earlier on January 10, had passed the order in a host of writ petitions filed alleging violations of the Assam Panchayat Act and its rules during the delimitation process. These pending petitions argue that the elections should be postponed until these errors are rectified.
