GUWAHATI: The State Government has held the headmasters/principals of 102 government schools accountable for pass percentages of less than 10 per cent in their respective schools in the High Leaving School Certificate (HSLC) and Assam High Madrassa examinations (AHM) 2022, and asked them to explain the reason for such substandard performance.
Interestingly, such notices were issued earlier as well to the heads of schools where the students fared poorly in previous HSLC and AHM examinations. Some headmasters/principals were threatened with transfers, but nothing came of it and examination results have continued to deteriorate further. "It is seen that the academic performance of your school is pathetically dismal. The poor result of your school reflects upon your performance. You have miserably failed to deliver your duties," the latest notice states.
Sources in the Education Department said that while people are pointing fingers at government schools over unsatisfactory results, it should be also noted that as many as 426 private schools of the state also registered pass percentages in the 0-10 bracket. The private schools take sizeable fees from the guardians concerned, the sources pointed out, and asked who will fix accountability when it comes to private schools.
The sources said that the Education Department has noticed over the last three-four years that poor commitment and involvement of some teachers of a section of government schools have contributed to below-par performances of their students. Further, in comparison with students of private schools, home-monitoring of their wards' day-to-day studies by parents is less common among students of many government schools. The sources also said that the atmosphere of academic competition is lacking for various reasons in those government schools which have performed poorly in the recent examinations
