Guwahati: Heavy rainfall was recorded in Upper Assam, especially in the Dibrugarh district, in the past 24 hours. Due to the water currents in the Brahmaputra River, the evening ferries operating between Guwahati and North Guwahati have been suspended for today as a precautionary measure.
The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) of the IMD at Guwahati issued a report on the chief amount of rainfall at different places in Dibrugarh district during the past 24 hours, which revealed that Khowang recorded 25 cm, Khanikar 21 cm, BCPL Dibrugarh 17 cm, DC Office Dibrugarh 16 cm, WRD Dibrugarh 9 cm, Dibrugarh A/P 5 cm, and Dibrugarh (AWS) 5 cm of rainfall.
The heavy rainfall in Dibrugarh resulted in flash floods in many places, disrupting normal life for the residents.

Jayanta Gogoi, an official of the Inland Water Transport department at Guwahati, told The Sentinel that the intensity of the water currents in the Brahmaputra at Guwahati has increased, and debris, including wood pieces, was seen floating on the river surface. This was a cause for concern in the IWT, and the department decided to suspend the ferry services between Guwahati and North Guwahati in the evening today. He further said that the situation will be reviewed in the morning tomorrow.
It should be mentioned that 3 ferries operate between Guwahati and different ghats in North Guwahati daily in the evening. These ferries did not operate on Friday evening, as per directions from the IWT department. Resumption of the service will depend on the prevailing conditions on Saturday.
Stating the current meteorological conditions on Friday, the RMC stated, "A fresh upper-air cyclonic circulation is likely to develop over the north Bay of Bengal and adjoining coastal Bangladesh & West Bengal around June 29, 2025. Under its influence a low-pressure area is likely to form over the same region during subsequent 24 hours."
The RMC's forecast for June 28 reads, "Moderate rain is very likely to occur at many places over Assam. Maximum temperature is likely to be above normal by 2 to 3 degrees in some places over Assam. Hot and humid conditions are very likely over the plains of Assam."
This was accompanied by a warning for June 28, which said, "Thunderstorm & Lightning is very likely to occur at isolated places over Assam. Heavy rain is very likely to occur at isolated places over Assam."
According to the CWC report on Friday morning, the Brahmaputra's water is below the danger level, but a rising trend is noticed. As of this morning, only the Disang River at Nanglamoraghat in Sivasagar district was flowing above the danger level.
