Guwahati: Respite from the torrid weather conditions is in store for people in Assam, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall at most places in Assam over the next few days. This forecast of rain is accompanied by a prediction of a gradual fall in temperature up to 5 degrees of the prevailing maximum temperature. Orange alerts have also been issued for several districts for June 16 and 17.
The IMD’s Regional Meteorological Centre at Guwahati has issued a special weather bulletin, which says about the current meteorological conditions: (i) The cyclonic circulation over Central Assam & neighbourhood persists and is now seen at 4.5 km above mean sea level; (ii) the cyclonic circulation over south Bangladesh & adjoining North Bay of Bengal now lies over Northwest Bay of Bengal & neighbourhood between 3.1 & 7.6 km above mean sea level, tilting southwestwards with height; and (iii) a trough runs from East Madhya Pradesh to Bangladesh across Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand & Gangetic West Bengal and extends up to 1.5 km above mean sea level, tilting southwestwards with height.
Under the influence of the above synoptic condition and expected moisture incursion from the Bay of Bengal, moderate rainfall at many to most places with heavy to very heavy rain at isolated places in Assam on June 16, 17, 18 and 19, 2025, along with thunderstorms and lightning with gusty wind speeds of 40-50 kmph.
The forecast and warning for June 16 reads, “Heavy (7-11 cm in 24 hrs) to very heavy rain (12-20 cm in 24 hrs) is very likely to occur at isolated places over the districts of Dima Hasao & West Karbi Anglong, accompanied by thunderstorms with lightning & gusty wind speeds of 40-50 kmph”.
The RMC’s forecast and warning for June 17 says, “Heavy (7-11 cm in 24 hrs) to very heavy rain (12-20 cm in 24 hrs) is very likely to occur at isolated places over the districts of Kokrajhar, Chirang, Barpeta, Dima Hasao, Cachar, Hailakandi & Sribhumi, accompanied by thunderstorms with lightning & gusty wind speeds of 40-50 kmph”. An Orange alert has been issued for the 7 districts named above.
In the past 24 hours, the highest rainfall of 11 cm was recorded at Amraghat in the Cachar district, followed by Karimganj with 9 cm and Silchar with 7 cm. Hajo, near Guwahati, recorded 5 cm of rainfall.
The highest maximum temperature of 37.2 degrees Celsius was recorded at Dibrugarh today. Guwahati recorded a maximum temperature of 35.2 degrees.
Meanwhile, the forecast for Assam and NE on June 16 says that moderate rain is very likely to occur at most places over Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram & Tripura and many places over Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland & Manipur. Maximum temperature is likely to be below normal over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura. Also, that the maximum temperature is very likely to fall by 3-5°C over the region.
The IMD’s prediction for Guwahati says that cloudy weather is likely over Guwahati city for the next 2–3 days, with a likelihood of heavy to very heavy rainfall across different parts of the city.
