Assam: Ninety-two schools upgraded to HS schools in state

Following approval from the government, the Director of Secondary Education has upgraded 92 high schools to higher secondary schools in as many as 29 districts in the state.

GUWAHATI: Following approval from the government, the Director of Secondary Education has upgraded 92 high schools to higher secondary schools in as many as 29 districts in the state. With this upgrading, the total number of higher secondary schools in the state now stands at 1,130.

The district-wise breakup of the 92 newly upgraded higher secondary schools is - two in Baksa; five in Barpeta; four in Biswanath; two in Bongaigaon; five in Cachar; two in Charaideo; two in Chirang; one each in Darrang and Dhemaji; two in Dhubri; three in Dibrugarh; four in Goalpara; two in Golaghat; one in Hailakandi; six in Jorhat; six in Majuli; 16 in Kamrup; three in Kamrup (Metro); one each in Karbi Anglong, West Karbi Anglong and Sribhumi; two each in Lakhimpur and Morigaon; three in Nagaon; six in Hojai; one in Nalbari; three each in Sivasagar and Nalbari; and two in Udalguri.

Barring Khonakhokora Higher Secondary, which has only a science stream in the Sivasagar district,

North Jamuguri Higher Secondary School in the Sonitpur district has both arts and science streams, and Swahid Mukunda Kakati Higher Secondary in the Biswanath district has arts and science streams; the rest of the 89 newly upgraded higher secondary schools have only arts streams.

The directorate upgraded these 92 high schools to higher secondary schools under certain criteria and conditions: there should not be any amalgamation proposals; the schools met the condition of two additional classrooms, and each of these schools has at least four graduate teachers holding postgraduate degrees in four core subjects. The directorate has also made it clear that the government will not create any new posts of teachers for these newly upgraded higher secondary schools, nor will it provide any additional financial grants to these upgraded schools.
