GUWAHATI: The Assam Police Service Rules have been amended, and the most recent amendment is the Assam Police Service (Amendment) Rules 2025. This amendment focuses on eligibility for appointment to the service, specifically addressing individuals with criminal convictions or pending criminal cases.
The methods to be followed in recruitment are through competitive examinations and through the promotion of confirmed inspectors of the police of the unarmed branch (UB) as well as the armed branch (AB). In special cases, the recruitment will be through competitive examinations from amongst persons other than inspectors of police serving in connection with the affairs of the government and other persons having qualifications and experiences suitable for services in the rank of Deputy Superintendent of Police.
While 50 per cent of the total number of posts will be filled up through direct recruitment, the remaining 50 per cent will be filled up through promotions. The filling up of posts in special cases should not exceed 5 per cent.
The amendment has made special mention that no convict in a criminal case or against whom a criminal case is pending in the court of law will be eligible for appointment to the service till he or she is acquitted by a competent court.
