Assam: Rs 700 Crore Sanctioned for Balance Work on Majuli-Jorhat Bridge

Guwahati: The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), on Thursday, sanctioned Rs 700 crore for the balance work on the Majuli-Jorhat bridge project.

In this regard, Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma said on his 'X' handle, "As regards to the construction of the 2-lane major bridge over the Brahmaputra between Majuli and Jorhat, today the expenditure finance committee of @MORTHIndia has cleared the revised cost estimate of about Rs 700 crore. The next step is to call for the tender. I am confident that the work will resume soon."

The said committee meeting was chaired by V. Umashankar, secretary MoRTH, in the presence of Debojit Das, chief engineer of Assam PWD (NH), Aditya Prakash, chief engineer MoRTH, Sudip Chaudhary, ADG MoRTH, and representatives of different ministries, including NITI Aayog.

Work on the bridge has been suspended since the first week of September 2024. The original contractor, UP State Bridge Corporation Ltd, finally surrendered the work in December 2024, after several delays in the construction work. As per the original schedule, the bridge over the mighty Brahmaputra, connecting the river island Majuli to the mainland in Jorhat, was supposed to be completed by the end of 2025.
