Guwahati: In a bid to protect land near religious sites in Barpeta, Majuli and Batadrava, the state government has imposed a ban on land sale and mutation for a period of 45 days. At the end of the 45 days of the ban, the government will review the order.

Earlier, in September 2024, the same ban for the same time was imposed for the places mentioned. After carrying out a review of the earlier order, the Revenue and Disaster Management Department has issued an office memorandum (OM) to renew the ban on land sale and mutation in respect of lands falling in Barpeta town in Barpeta District, in the district of Majuli, and areas within a 5 km periphery of Batadrava Than in Nagaon District, again for 45 days.

The OM stated, “In view of the amendments passed by the Assam Legislative Assembly to insert Chapter XII of the Assam Land and Revenue Regulation, 1886, and in continuation of the earlier Office Memorandum dated September 6, 2024, the following temporary measures are to be implemented with immediate effect, until further orders: In respect of lands falling in Barpeta town in Barpeta District, areas within 5 km periphery of Batadrava Than in Nagaon District, and in the district of Majuli, no new land sale permission shall be granted for a period of 45 days and; no fresh mutations shall be processed in respect of lands falling in Barpeta town in Barpeta District, areas within 5 km periphery of Batadrava Than in Nagaon District, and in the district of Majuli for a period of 45 days.”

The OM also stated that these measures will be reviewed after the completion of the 45-day period, subject to prevailing circumstances. The Assam Legislative Assembly last year passed an amendment to insert Chapter XII of the Assam Land and Revenue Regulation, 1886, the purpose of which was to protect land of indigenous people from being sold to outsiders. Also, a ban was imposed on the sale and mutation of land near religious sites in the state.
