Guwahati: The Assam Police’s Special Task Force (STF) made an important breakthrough in the continuation of Operation Praghat when it apprehended the prime accused in a case related to a jihadi network in Assam.

The STF Assam captured the absconding Gazi Rahman of Kokrajhar District, the prime accused in STF PS Case No. 21/2024, with the help of Kokrajhar Police, while continuing its investigation into activities of jihadis in Assam. Gazi Rahman, aged 35 years, and son of late Mahmad Ali Mondal, is a resident of Bhodeyaguri under the police station and district of Kokrajhar.

Earlier, the STF Assam carried out a successful ‘Raid and Search Operation’ on the night of December 24, arresting two members of a terror module at Namapara under the Kokrajhar police station area, with the help of Kokrajhar Police. The duo was part of a sleeper cell, which was said to have been activated post the situation in Bangladesh. The STF was lauded for averting a terror attack by the fundamentalist jihadi elements of the global terror organisation Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT), connected to AQIS, or Al Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent.

In the course of subsequent interrogation and search operations, a huge cache of arms and ammunition and other warlike items was recovered from the hideout of one of the arrested accused persons. The operation was carried out under the direct supervision of STF, Assam chief Partha Sarathi Mahanta.

The STF said it is continuing its efforts to apprehend all individuals connected to this case, even as further investigation in the case continued.
