GUWAHATI: For the first time, the Assam State Election Commission (SEC) is going to provide Photo Voter Slips (PVS) to all electors in the Panchayat poll 2025.
Earlier, the Election Commission of India (ECI) provided such voter slips to the electors in Assembly and Lok Sabha elections. In the line of ECI, the state SEC has also taken the step to provide photo voter slips to the electors in the panchayat poll as well to enhance the efficiency of polling staff by enabling them to easily identify electors in electoral rolls using the serial numbers and other details provided in photo voter slips.
Since it is a new step, the Assam State Election Commission has issued guidelines regarding the generation and distribution of photo voter slips to 27 district commissioners where panchayat polls are slated to be held. According to the guidelines, the booth-level officers appointed by the ECI will distribute the photo voter slips to the electors from door to door well ahead of the panchayat poll.
Photo voter slips will mention the polling stations of the electors. This will also help the voters to identify their polling stations.
The panchayat poll 2025 will be in two phases in Assam – on May 2 and May 7, 2025. The total number of electors in this panchayat poll is 1,80,36,682.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma started the campaign for the panchayat poll on April 21 from upper Assam that will go for poll in the first phase. The Barak Valley will also go for a poll in the first phase. Central Assam and Lower Assam will go for panchayat polls in the second phase. The polling time is 7.30 am to 4.30 pm for both the phases.
The counting of votes is on May 11.
