GUWAHATI: The Commissionerate of State GST (SGST) said that the collection of taxes has picked up pace in Assam.
Speaking to the media here today, State Joint Commissioner of Tax Arunima Chowdhury said, “The collection of taxes was less till recently. However, following a directive from Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, of late, we have geared up tax collection in the state. A good collection of taxes is a must for the development of the state on all fronts.”
Chowdhury said, “A section of businessmen in the state evade taxes. We’ve taken measures to prevent tax dodging. Businessmen pay GST on the self-assessment system. However, a section of businessmen shows less GST. On suspicion, we have conducted 43 search and seizure operations in the state, leading to the detection of tax evasion of Rs 33.34 crore since May. We collected Rs 5.34 crore of the dozed taxes.”
Chowdhury said, “It came to light that some businessmen show a lower cost price of goods with a view to evade tax. We conducted operations at Azara Railway Yard, Paltan Bazar Point, Mirza, Baihata, Kamakhya, Bhanga, and Silchar. During the operations, we detained a total of 83 vehicles, leading to the collection of Rs 41.53 lakh in tax since May this year.”
Chowdhury said, “GST collection has no system of check-gates. However, we can conduct vigils from time to time. From June 1 to July 1, 2025, we conducted a vigil of goods-carrying vehicles at Srirampur and Boxirhat check-gates, leading to the collection of Rs 90 lakh.”
She said, “We identified 352 fake GST registrations of businessmen who have no business establishments in Assam. These ghost businessmen show goods exported to other states on papers only and show a fake input tax credit (ITC) number. Monitoring such ITC numbers, we found that these 352 businessmen submitted transacted fake trading bills amounting to Rs 1,400 crore without any actual trading. Of the total fake transacted trading bills, bills amounting to Rs 1,200 crore have shown goods traded to other states. We have caught 43 businessmen producing fake ITC numbers of Rs 32.27 crore taxable values, leading to the collection of Rs 7.26 crore. The fake registrations have been cancelled.”
Chowdhury further said, “The State GST sleuths arrested two persons – Varun Goyal and Ishak Ahmed – in connection with tax evasion. The police also arrested seven transporters while action on an FIR lodged by the Tax Department.”
