GUWAHATI: The state government has taken a slew of measures to make the district transport offices (DTOs) free from corruption, providing most of the manual services in the contactless mode.
Opening a fully automated vehicle testing centre in Biswanath today, Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma said that this centre would issue automated fitness certificates for vehicles instead of manual ones. This is the second such centre after the one at ISBT in Guwahati, and the next such centre will be in Jorhat, he said.
"Vehicle owners can now get a fitness certificate without any manual intervention and without visiting the DTO office and with zero scope of corruption. After offering 56 contactless transport services, today we have launched one of the most advanced automated vehicle testing centres. Assam is doing fabulous work in digitizing and automating the transport system that has benefitted 34 lakh people," the Chief Minister said.
Getting a fitness certificate issued from a DTO office through the manual checking has been a time-taking process. In this process, the regional transport offices issue certificates after physical verifications of vehicles. Apart from the serpentine queues in front of DTO offices, middlemen taking undue advantage were the order of the day to get a vehicle fitness certificate issued.
Some of the important contactless services being provided by the department are the renewal of driving licences, applying for learner licences, vehicle registration, NOC for transferring vehicle ownership, checking RC status, etc., through the Parivahan website.
