Guwahati: The Assam State School Education Board (ASSEB) on Wednesday issued a public advisory to all parents and guardians, urging them to thoroughly scrutinise schools before enrolling their children in them. This move by the board comes in the wake of alarming revelations gleaned from the results of the High School Leaving Certificate (HSLC) Examination 2025.
The Board stated that the reason for issuing the public notice is that “a school plays the most important role in developing a child into a responsible citizen as well as assuring a good academic future.”
ASSEB also referred to the recent outcomes in the HSLC examination, which make it clear that poor facilities and mismanagement directly affect academic performance.
According to ASSEB, 141 private schools across the state recorded a nil (0%) pass rate in the HSLC exams this year. The Board attributes these dismal results to critical shortcomings in infrastructure, unqualified teaching staff, lack of laboratories and libraries, and even non-registration of an institution in the proper board or council.
Addressing concerns related to the conduct of examinations, the Board also disclosed that 19 private educational institutions were found guilty of prematurely opening Class XI question paper packets before the official exam date in 2025, thereby violating exam protocols and compromising the sanctity of the examination process.
The Board, therefore, stressed that before enrolling their children, parents must verify essential aspects of a school, such as good infrastructure, qualified teachers, availability of laboratory and library facilities and valid registration.
The board also provided the number of private schools with zero pass percentage in different districts— 4 schools in Baksa, 6 in Barpeta, 2 in Biswanath, 2 in Bongaigaon, 15 in Cachar, 1 in Charaideo, 3 in Chirang, 3 in Darrang, 3 in Dhemaji, 2 in Dhubri, 8 in Dibrugarh, 5 in Dima Hasao, 5 in Goalpara, 9 in Golaghat, 6 in Hailakandi, 2 in Hojai, 5 in Jorhat, 5 in Kamrup, 7 in Kamrup (Metro), 5 in Karbi Anglong, 6 in Kokrajhar, 4 in Lakhimpur, 3 in Majuli, 4 in Morigaon, 6 in Nagaon, 2 in Nalbari, 3 in Sivasagar, 6 in Sonitpur, 1 in Tinsukia, 5 in Udalguri, and 3 schools in West Karbi Anglong district.
ASSEB also gave the number of private schools involved in examination malpractices— 1 in Bajali, 1 in Barpeta, 2 in Cachar, 4 in Dhemaji, 1 in Hailakandi, 2 in Kamrup (Metro), 2 in Lakhimpur, 1 in Majuli, 3 in Nagaon, 1 in Nalbari and 1 in Goalpara district.
Parents who wish to transfer their children from such private institutions to government ones have been assured full support from the board in facilitating the change.
