GUWAHATI: With the anti-CAB (Citizenship Amendment Bill) protest turning violent in the afternoon in Guwahati on Wednesday the AASU (All Assam Students’ Union) has appealed to all sections of people in the State to exercise restraint and maintain peace. The students’ body has made it clear that breaking of laws will only defame the democratic protest against the CAB.

Talking to The Sentinel on Wednesday evening, AASU president Dipanko Kumar Nath said, “The AASU is a democratic students’ organization that has no room for violence. We’ve, however, seen that a section of people went violent in today’s protest in the afternoon. We, therefore, appeal to all sections of people to exercise restraint and continue peaceful protest against the CAB.”

Nath further said, “If the anti-CAB protest turns violent, other inimical forces will give it a wrong direction. Our protest against the CAB will linger. We, therefore, appeal to all sections of people of the State to have patience and protest so that we can compel the Centre to reverse its anti-Assam decisions.”

AASU general secretary Lurinjyoti Gogoi said, “The Central government has shown scant regard to the voice of protest to the CAB from Assam and other States in the Northeast. However, we need to ensure that our protest is non-violent. We appeal to all stakeholders in the State to opt only for peaceful protest.”

Meanwhile, the AASU and artistes’ fraternity are going to hold a joint meeting at Latasil playground in Guwahati on Thursday against the CAB.
