Guwahati: Small tea growers contribute 53.42% to the country’s total production, while the contribution of small tea growers in Assam comes to 47.25% of the total Assam tea production.

These facts were revealed in a recent report of the Union Ministry of Commerce & Industry. Tea production in the country in 2023-24 was 1382.03 million kg as compared to 1374.97 million kg (M kg) in 2022-23 and 1344.40 million kg in 2021-22, registering a consistent growth in this period.

Till October 2024, the tea production in the country has been 1112.11 M kg as compared to 1178.50 M kg of tea production during the same period in the previous year. Assam tea production in 2024 (till October) has been 577.07 M kg as compared to 598.27 M kg of tea produced in the same period in the previous year.

Small tea grower means a person owning a tea garden with an area up to 10.12 hectares (ha). As per the Tea Board of India, the total number of small tea growers in the country as of March 31, 2024, was 2,47,887, contributing 53.42% to the country’s total tea production. Out of the total, the number of small tea growers in Assam was 1,33,626 and they are contributing 47.25% to Assam’s total tea production.
