GUWAHATI: State BJP leader Muminul Aowal, who is also the chairman of the Assam Minority Development Board (AMDB), has said that the ethnic communities of Assam have been suffering due to illegal infiltration into the State. Aowal has demanded that the ethnic communities of the State should get Constitutional safeguards under the Clause 6 of the Assam Accord.

Speaking at the ‘Face-to-face’ programme organized by Dispur Press Club on Saturday, Aowal said, “Around 50-55 lakh infiltrators got citizenship of India from 1951 to 1971 in accordance with the Assam Accord. The Clause 6 of the Assam Accord is a tool to neutralize the impact of the infiltration.”

Adding, “We want that the ethnic people who have been suffering because of the infiltrators should get Constitutional safeguards”, Aowal asserted, “There should be no deadline to provide Constitutional safeguards. Some people want the deadline so that they can get the Khilanjia (indigenous) tag.”
