Guwahati: The spectre of ghost students will no more haunt the School Education department, as around 4 lakh ghost or duplicate students have been removed from the Shiksha Setu app.

This was revealed by Samagra Shiksha, Assam (SSA), in its recently released annual report for 2023-24.

Presently, the Shiksha Setu Axom portal has successfully onboarded a total of 43,839 schools, encompassing a total of 47,87,857 students and involving 2,10,602 teaching staff and 19,632 non-teaching staff, the report states.

Regarding the future planning by SSA, it is mentioned that government schools, like private schools carrying on the practice, will be sending SMS to parents about absenteeism of their sons or daughters and teachers about students’ absenteeism and leave, etc. In the future, the Shiksha Setu app and portal will enable the capturing of the service records of teachers in digital format, i.e., a digital service book. Moreover, the app will also enable requisition of uniforms and additional free textbooks by schools.

SSA implemented the Shiksha Setu Axom online portal and app to monitor the real-time performance of schools, students, and the teaching and non-teaching staff. It captures daily attendance of both students and staff within the 300-meter geo-fencing area of the school campus. The primary goal of this initiative is to instill accountability and enhance the efficiency of the education system, establishing a benchmark for excellence, the report states.

The Shiksha Setu app represents a transformative digital platform designed to provide a comprehensive overview of schools, staff, and students within its ecosystem. It aims to centralise and streamline administrative operations by serving as a singular repository of essential information.

The portal incorporates features for monitoring the retirement of staff, using predictive analytics over the next 3/6/9/12/24 months, analysing probable vacancies, assessing PTR, and evaluating subject-wise teacher utilization.  The portal also offers predictive analysis regarding potential school amalgamations in the near future. Besides, it facilitates the leave applications of the staff through online mode, streamlining the approval process based on leave accounts.

To enable better school management, the app allows for identification of teachers’ utilisation status, proper utilisation of under-utilised teachers, and identification of subject-wise teachers availability. It also utilises teachers’ knowledge for co-scholastic activities like singing, dance, drawing, music, etc.

Some outcomes of the Shiksha Setu app are that teachers are coming to school in time, and the system is helping in the removal of proxy teachers, identifying duplicate or fake student names, detecting probable dropout signs like students being continuously absent for more than 1/2/3/4 weeks, and uniform grants and free textbooks are provided based on enrolment reflected in the Shiksha Setu Axom portal. The app also enables Drop Box transfer of students from one school to any other school within the state without the requirement of a transfer certificate.
