GUWAHATI: The State Election Commission (SEC) announced the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) poll schedule today. Two-child norm, educational qualifications, possessing sanitary latrines are some of the criteria for the eligibility of candidates in this poll. According to the SEC, the GMC poll will be on April 19, 2022. And the declaration of results will be on April 21.
With the declaration of the poll schedule today, the model code of conduct came into force with immediate effect in the GMC area.
The Returning Officer (Kamrup (M) DC) has already set up a monitoring cell to check any violation of the code of conduct.
While the last date of filing nomination is March 30, the last date for withdrawal of candidature is April 4.
ST, SC, OBC and MOBC candidates must have passed Class XII standard. Other candidates must have graduated to contest the GMC poll. The nominations of candidates who have no sanitary latrines in their residences will stand rejected.
Earlier, the State Government announced that candidates having more than two children would be barred from contesting local body elections. This criterion will be applicable in the GMC poll. Since this GMC Act was amended in 2019, candidates having more than two children before 2019 can contest this poll. Candidates who have criminal cases against them must declare the cases through advertisements in the media.
The GMC area has 7.97 lakh voters – 3.97 lakh males, 4 lakh females and 27 third gender.
Women candidates have 50 per cent seats reserved for them in the 60-ward GMC. A candidate cannot spend over Rs 2.50 lakh. The GMC has 789 polling booths. Polling will be from 7.30 am-4.30 pm.
