Guwahati: Tea exports marked a slight decline in the first five months of this calendar year, but the prices fetched were quite high when compared to the prices during the same period in 2024.
According to the provisional figures cited in the latest report of the Tea Board of India, during the span from January to May, 2025, a total of 103.74 million kg of tea was exported from India with a unit price of 291.16 per kg. Of this, 65.95 million kg of tea came from the North India zone, and the remaining 37.79 million kg originated in the South India zone.
During the same period last year, India exported 105.33 million kg of tea at a unit price of Rs 249.17 per kg. The increase in prices this year is stated as 16.85%.
It is to be noted that, in the last calendar year, India exported 256.17 million kg of tea at a unit price of Rs 279.79 per kg. Of this total, 155.49 million kg came from the North India zone and 100.68 million kg came from the South India zone.
Significantly, the tea originating from Assam is included in the North India zone. Assam tea is famous worldwide for its strength and aroma.
