GUWAHATI: The Assam Police arrested a mother-son duo on the charge of their involvement in a racket dealing with illegal trade with wildlife. The police arrested Rindik Teringpi, wife of Longsing Senar of Gita Langkok village under Baithalangshu police station in the West Karbi Anglong district, and her son Bidasingh Senar from Shillong on August 16, 2023. The police also seized 760 grams of pangolin scales from Teringpi.
According to sources, the duo was involved in the interstate trading of wildlife body parts. They have cases regarding the smuggling of tiger skins and bones.
On June 29, Azara police arrested four accused along with tiger skin and bones from Dharapur on the outskirts of Guwahati and handed them over to the Forest Department. The smugglers killed the tiger in Gadchiroli, Maharashtra, and its skin and bones were on their way to Meghalaya for further delivery. Considering the organized network involvement, the case was handed over to WCCB (Wildlife Crime Control Bureau), and a case (G/1] of 2023 u/s 9/39/40/48A/49B/51 of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972 SRO, WCCB, Guwahati) was registered and investigated.
WCCB sought the help of the Special Task Force (STF) of the Assam Police to investigate the case. And the STF, with the help of West Karbi Anglong Police, arrested the duo yesterday. The duo has been in police custody for three days. The investigation points to the involvement of some transnational border illegal wildlife contraband trade.
