GUWAHATI: With the strength of Congress reduced to 20 — one short of the one-sixth of the total seats in the House — Assam Assembly Speaker Hitendranath Goswami withdrew the Leader of Opposition status from CLP (Congress Legislative Party) leader Debabrata Saikia.

To maintain the 'Leader of Opposition' status intact, the Congress needs at least 21 members in the House of 126.

The strength of the Congress in the State Assembly fell with the demise of former Assembly Speaker Pranab Kumar Gogoi and former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, besides the resignation of party MLAs Ajanta Neog and Rajdeep Gowala.

Saikia had been enjoying the status of 'Leader of Opposition' since June, 2016.
