GUWAHATI: Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the practice of throwing forbidden meats in temples and masjids should be stopped so as to make Assam 'a place of peace and progress.'

Speaking to the media here today, the Chief Minister said that he does not want anyone to throw forbidden meats neither in naamghars nor in masjids. "A section of people wants to weaponise beef by throwing it in temples to make the Hindus move away. Maybe the other section is reciprocating the same tactics by throwing pork in masjids. The general people should come forward to protest both tactics, as we need to stay together with respect to each other's sacred places. Let the conspiracy to trigger unrest in Assam be stopped. If anyone is out to trigger unrest in the state, the government won't spare them," he said.

A few days ago the Assam Police raided 178 eateries and hotels, leading to the seizure of a huge quantity of beef. The police also busted an illegal cow slaughterhousein Morbazar in South Geramari in the Dhubri district yesterday. The police found the skinned carcass and butchering tools at the spot. The police arrested a person in that connection, and three others have been absconding.

According to the Assam Cattle Preservation Act, 2021, cow slaughter and beef eating are prohibited within a five km radius of residential areas of Hindus, Jains, Sikhs, mandirs, naamghars, xatras, etc.
