Guwahati: The Assam government and the central government are planning to construct a major new bridge over the Brahmaputra River, connecting Morigaon district’s Bhuragaon on the south bank with Kaupati in the Darrang district on the north bank. The planning for the bridge is at an advanced stage, with preparation of the detailed project report (DPR) underway.
The proposed length of the bridge will be around 7.63 km, which will make it a major two-lane bridge. It will be funded by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) and implemented by the state PWD (NH division) department. The DPR is being prepared by SA Infrastructure Consultants Pvt Ltd, in association with NPEC Consultants Pvt Ltd.
The bridge will be a part of NH 715A, and it will connect Morigaon on the south bank. On the north bank side, the bridge will connect Rowta from the Kaupati end. From Rowta, a new road is being proposed to the India-Bhutan border near Samrang, the length of which will be around 52 km.
Recently, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had hinted that the work on the proposed bridge will be started from next year. The proposed bridge over the Brahmaputra will be located between the Kaliabhomora Bridge and the under-construction Guwahati-North Guwahati Bridge, which is scheduled to be completed towards the end of next year.
According to state PWD sources, once the work on the proposed bridge is started, it will be completed within a targeted time of four years.
Meanwhile, the MoRTH has earmarked Rs 3,706 for the bridge project in its annual plan for Assam in the current financial year.
The state government has completed the estimate required for the acquisition of necessary land for the bridge.
