Guwahati: Regarding power generation by the private sector in the Northeast, Sikkim tops the list of the eight Northeastern states and Assam is placed in second place.
This was disclosed in a report released recently by the Union Ministry of Power. From financial year (FY) 2019-20 to FY 2024-25 (till October 2024), the private sector in Sikkim generated 11,662 million units of electricity. During the period mentioned, Sikkim produced the highest of 2,366 million units in FY 2022-23. In the current FY (till October 2024), private players produced 1,416 million units of power in Sikkim.
In Assam, from financial year (FY) 2019-20 to FY 2024-25 (till October 2024), the private sector generated 1266 million units. In a breakdown of power generated by private players FY-wise, 59 million units were produced in FY 2019-20, 52 million units in FY 2020-21, 122 million units in FY 2021-22, 279 million units in FY 2022-23, 381 million units in 2023-24, and 333 million units in FY 2024-25 (till October 2024). This displays an increasing trend in power generation by private players in the state.
As for the rest of the NE states, from financial year (FY) 2019-20 to FY 2024-25 (till October 2024), Nagaland produced 468 million units of power, Meghalaya 396 million units, Mizoram 322, Tripura 69, Manipur 42, and Arunachal Pradesh 35 million units.
