GUWAHATI: The North-East Petroleum Mazdoor Union has suspended loading and unloading operations in Meghalaya amid the prevailing unrest in different parts of the State, citing concerns over the safety of petroleum workers and transporters.
In a statement, union general secretary Ramen Das said the decision was taken in view of the continuing disturbances linked to protests by a student organisation. The union clarified that it was not opposed to the students' movement but strongly objected to violence, assault and destruction being carried out in the name of agitation.
The union said petroleum products are highly inflammable and any disruption or attack involving fuel-carrying vehicles could pose a serious threat to lives and property.
It appealed to the Meghalaya government to restore law and order and take strict action against those involved in acts of violence and vandalism.
According to the union, its members are unwilling to resume supply of petroleum products to Meghalaya until the situation improves. It said essential commodities could not be transported safely in an atmosphere of fear and insecurity.
The union further alleged that oil and gas drivers operating in Meghalaya have frequently faced harassment by miscreants and claimed that appropriate action had not been taken despite such incidents being brought to the attention of police authorities.
The work stoppage will continue until normalcy returns to the State, the union said.
The suspension of petroleum loading and unloading operations could have implications for the movement and supply of fuel in Meghalaya if the situation persists
