Education Volunteers seek relaxation of TET qualification
STAFF REPORTER
GUWAHATI: The Gauhati High Court has directed Education Volunteers (EVs) to file a representation before the Secretary, School Education Department, Government of Assam, for relaxing the mandatory TET qualification and permitting them to apply for teachers’ posts.
The court was hearing a writ petition (WP(C)/3667/2023) filed by many petitioners. The petitioners were serving as Education Volunteers (EVs) under different Education Guarantee Scheme (EGS) Centres which were established for implementation of provisions of the Right to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009. The appointments of the petitioners as Education Volunteers were made after a selection process. The EGS Centres were shut down due to exhaustion of funds and the petitioners are now jobless. They also do not possess the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) qualifications. As such, they are unable to apply for the post of teachers.
The petitioners had made a representation before the State Education Minister dated 02.06.2022, appealing to him to relax the mandatory TET qualification for the petitioners and to permit them to apply for any teacher post.
The court stated that the representation dated 02.06.2022 was made before the State Education Minister and not before the appropriate authority. The court directed the petitioners to file a fresh representation before the Secretary, School Education Department, Government of Assam, within a period of two weeks from the court order. On receipt of the representation, the court directed the Secretary, School Education Department to consider and dispose of the representation by bringing out an order in accordance with law within a period of two months from the date of receipt of the representation. With this, the court disposed of the writ petition.
