Three Assam writers bag Sahitya Akademi Prize for Translation 2024

Guwahati: Three writers of Assam have been named for the prestigious Sahitya Akademi Prize for Translation 2024. They are Anjan Sarma, Basudeb Das, and Uttara Bwiswmuthiary.

Anjan Sarma bagged the prize for translating the English book ‘Early History of Kamrupa’ penned by Kanak Lal Barua into Assamese, with the title ‘Prachin Kamrupar Itihas.’ Basudeb Das won the prize for his translation of Homen Borgohain’s Assamese novel ‘Saudar Puteke Nao Meli Jai’ into the Bengali ‘Sodagorer Putra Nouka Beye Jai.’ The third writer, Uttara Bwiswmuthiary, has bagged the prize for translating Anuradha Sharma Pujaree’s Assamese novel ‘Kanchan’ into a Bodo language book of the same name.

The Sahitya Akademi today announced the names of its translation prize winners for 21 languages. The prize carries an amount of Rs 50,000 and a copper plaque. The Akademi stated that the date and place of the award presentation ceremony will be announced later.

Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya congratulated the Sahitya Akademi awardees Anjan Sarma (Assamese), Basudeb Das (Bengali), and Uttara Bwiswmuthiary (Bodo) for the prestigious awards.

Acharya said in a statement, “Their remarkable work in the arena of literature not only bridges linguistic boundaries but also enriches our cultural and intellectual heritage. May their contributions continue to inspire generations, and their achievements soar to even greater heights in the years to come.” He also said that their achievements have brought laurels to the state, which will definitely be an inspiration to posterity.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma also congratulated the Sahitya Akademi prize winners. In a post on X, the CM said, “Congratulations to the winners of the @sahityaakademi Prize for Translation from Assam.... Shri Anjan Sarma (Assamese), Shri Basudeb Das (Bengali), and Smt. Uttara Bwiswmuthiary (Bodo).... Your achievements will inspire the young generation of writers and translators.”
