Guwahati: In a bid to boost road connectivity between Guwahati and Dalu on the India-Bangladesh international border, the Government of India has decided to construct the Tura Bypass with an estimated cost of Rs 520.40 crore. The proposed project has implications from the defence point of view.
The National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation (NHIDCL) on Friday invited bids for the construction of a two-lane road with a paved shoulder on the Tura Bypass in hybrid annuity mode in the state of Meghalaya. The length of the proposed bypass is 29.03 km.
The Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH) had earlier entrusted NHIDCL with the development, maintenance, and management of the proposed road. The proposed road section starts from NH-127B at existing Km 57+500 of Sanchonggre village and ends at Jenggitchakgre Village on NH-217. The road passes through the West Garo Hills and South West Garo Hills districts of Meghalaya.
As for the details in construction of the proposed road section, the terrain is said to be mountainous and steep. There will be 3 major and 4 minor bridges as well as 56 culverts and 3 major junctions on the stretch of road proposed.
It is to be mentioned that the Centre has taken up various programmes of up-gradation and development of national highways (NHs), including those in the NE region. The NHs in the country are under the MoRTH. These networks of roads are constructed and managed by various departments like the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), NHIDCL, the Public Works Departments (PWDs) of the state governments, etc.
Earlier, the NHIDCL, Government of Meghalaya, was entrusted with the assignment of preparation of a Detailed Project Report for "Construction of 2-lane with paved shoulder Tura Bypass from Km 0+000 to Km 29+030 (Length 29.030) of NH-127B and NH-217."
The NH-217 is the only route that connects Guwahati to Dalu via Tura and has great importance from the defence point of view.
