Guwahati: Two new ropeway projects will be set up in Assam under the central government’s Parvatmala Pariyojana. National Highways Logistics Management Limited (NHLML) has now invited bids for the preparation of detailed project reports (DPR) for the two projects at Haflong and Cachar.

National Highways Logistics Management Limited (NHLML), a wholly owned company of NHAI and a statutory authority under the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH), has been assigned the work for the development of ropeway projects under the Parvatmala Pariyojana in the entire country.

According to a list of upcoming ropeway projects issued by NHLML, two projects have been earmarked for Assam. These are a ropeway project at Jatinga Bird Watching Tower at Haflong and Bhuban Pahar Mahadev Temple in the Cachar district. The tentative length of the project at Haflong is 3.5 km, and that of the project in Cachar is 2.78 km.

NHLML has invited bids for 18 ropeway projects across the country.

Earlier, the NHML issued a Notice Inviting Tender for the Development, Operation, and Maintenance of the Ropeway between Kamakhya Railway Station and near Kamakhya Temple in Guwahati on a Hybrid Annuity Mode. The length of the project is given as 1.43 km, and the estimated project cost is pegged at Rs 141.94 crore.

The Government of India announced the National Ropeway Development Programme—Parvatmala Pariyojana—in the Union Budget 2022-23 for the development of ropeways to improve last-mile connectivity in hilly regions and alternative mobility in heavily congested urban areas. The idea is to improve connectivity and convenience for commuters, besides promoting tourism. This may also cover congested urban areas, where a conventional mass transit system is not feasible.
