GUWAHATI: The validity of motor-vehicle documents (having a renewal date of February 2020) will expire on October 30, 2021. These documents include among others the driving licence and also the vehicle-registration certificate. This move has been taken following the directive of the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH).

Notably, the Ministry had given such extension up to seven times since February 2020.

October 30 will be the final day for renewal of such documents as the last day of this month falls on a Sunday, informed a senior official of the State Transport Department here. The MoRTH had extended the renewal deadline for the last time till October 31, because of the second wave of Covid-19 pandemic.

The MoRTH directive added, "The Assam government has requested all the District Transport Officers (DTOs) to implement the extension so that citizens, transporters and other organisations do not get harassed or face difficulties.

The MoRTH had earlier issued advisories dated March 30, 2020; June 9, 2020; August 24, 2020; December 27, 2020; March 26, 2021; and June 17, 2021, in connection with the extension of validity of documents related to the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, and Central Motor Vehicle Rules, 1989.

"Now the people who had to pay vehicle taxes in February 2020, will have to clear it within October 30," said Assistant Commissioner of Transport Gautam Das said.

"However, those who have to clear their dues before 2020 were not included in the extension. We are planning a separate drive for them," added Das.

Despite Covid-19 restrictions, the State Transport Department has collected more than Rs 100 crore as vehicle tax from April to September 30, this year, pointed out Das.
