PALASBARI: Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday emphasized that any individual supporting Pakistan or Bangladesh, irrespective of their religion, would not be spared. The CM also posed three questions to Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi regarding his wife’s alleged links with Pakistan, the MP’s Pakistan tour and the citizenship of his children.
“Whoever extends their support for Pakistan, whether he is a Hindu or a Muslim, I will not spare anyone. If anyone extends their support for Bangladesh, they will also face the same result,” he declared during a media interaction at the office of the BJP’s Airport Mandal Committee in Borjhar.
Following the dastardly terrorist attack on tourists in Kashmir’s Pahalgam, several persons were arrested in Assam for unfavourable comments on the attack on social media platforms. They have been charged with ‘treason’.
CM Dr Sarma, while addressing the media, questioned the actions and affiliations of Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi. He asked, “Why doesn’t he clarify whether he has stayed in Pakistan for 15 days or not? I wonder how he learnt to offer namaz so well, as there are no training centres for namaz in Assam or India.”
Further intensifying the controversy, Sarma raised concerns about Gogoi’s wife allegedly working with salary from a Pakistani NGO, implying potential ties to Pakistan. “If your wife works with a salary from a Pakistani NGO, is she not a Pakistani agent?” CM Sarma asked.
The Chief Minister also called on Gaurav Gogoi to clarify the citizenship status of his children.
He further expressed his astonishment at the possibility that the granddaughter of former CM Tarun Gogoi might not hold Indian citizenship, describing it as “embarrassing”. He went on to say, “Forget about your wife’s citizenship status; what is the citizenship of your children? Clarify this in front of the people. I will ask about their religion later. I have my doubts. I will say after a few days that their two children are not Indian. I’m saying this as the CM. I will need some time to prove my claims. On September 10, I will present proof regarding my claims.”
The Chief Minister further revealed that the state government was ramping up efforts to address the issue of illegal migrants in Assam. “We are also going to start a campaign on people who have taken Aadhaar cards and are residing in Assam without applying for NRC, although we have already stopped this. We are digging deeper into another issue, on which I will speak soon,” the CM added.
CM Sarma stated that the state was also preparing a robust plan to deport illegal migrants who have entered India in recent years. He pointed out that there had been cases where people had applied for Aadhaar cards without applying for the National Register of Citizens (NRC), though the process has now been halted.
The Chief Minister also issued a firm directive to the Assam Police to take strict action against individuals supporting Pakistan. “I have given blanket orders to the Assam police not to look at faces. If anyone is found extending support to Pakistan, they should be apprehended and put under NSA charges, if needed,” he affirmed.
In a final statement, CM Sarma declared that in the next 2-3 days, his government would conduct a drive to investigate how many people in Assam were using Aadhaar cards without being enrolled in the NRC.
CM Dr Sarma’s comments were made during his participation in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Mann Ki Baat’ radio program, which he attended at the BJP’s Airport Mandal committee office. During the nationwide broadcast, the Chief Minister shared insights on key developments and ongoing initiatives in the state.
