Guwahati: MLA Akhil Gogoi has criticised Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma over the government’s handling of the recent floods, alleging that the state has not provided any separate flood relief package.
Gogoi claimed that the assistance reaching flood-affected families has been provided through the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund (CMRF), rather than through a dedicated relief package announced by the Assam government.
According to Gogoi, the Chief Minister has not personally contributed any amount towards flood relief. He accused Sarma of disrespecting both the people affected by the floods and those who voluntarily stepped forward to help them.
Gogoi also accused the Chief Minister of adopting an authoritarian style of functioning, saying Sarma was acting “like a king”.
The Raijor Dal leader further questioned a recent directive issued by Sarma to the Assam Police. He argued that executive orders must remain within the framework of the Constitution and cannot take precedence over constitutional provisions.
“In a democracy, the words of a king are not the law. The Constitution is the supreme source of law,” Gogoi said.
His comments come as the Assam government faces criticism from opposition leaders over its flood response and the manner in which relief assistance is being provided to affected families.
