Guwahati: Floodwaters continued to disrupt parts of Assam on Friday, with 13 districts still affected and the death toll reaching 98, even as the number of people impacted by the deluge declined, according to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA).
The latest fatality was recorded in Mahmora revenue circle of Charaideo district.
ASDMA data showed that 1,55,849 people are currently affected by the floods, down from more than 1.68 lakh a day earlier. The number of affected districts also dropped from 15 to 13.
Flooding has been reported in 33 revenue circles and 464 villages across Sivasagar, Golaghat, Nagaon, Hojai, Sonitpur, Dhemaji, Darrang, Biswanath, Kamrup Metropolitan, Lakhimpur, Udalguri, Jorhat and Charaideo.
Golaghat has recorded the highest number of affected people at 58,750, followed by Sivasagar with 48,286 and Jorhat with 25,259.
Relief operations remain underway, with 55 relief camps currently sheltering more than 10,000 people. The authorities have also set up 18 relief distribution centres to provide essential supplies to affected residents.
The flood situation remains serious along some stretches of rivers. The Dhansiri is flowing above the danger level at Golaghat town and Numaligarh, while the Kushiyara continues to remain above the danger mark in Sribhumi.
The flooding has also caused significant agricultural and livestock losses. Around 10,748.64 hectares of farmland remain submerged, while more than 47,000 animals have been affected. Damage to roads, bridges, houses and other infrastructure has also been reported from several districts.
