Guwahati: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) national president Nitin Nabin on Friday urged voters to keep the Congress's past tenure in mind while casting their votes in the Assam Assembly elections.

Addressing a campaign rally in Kamalpur in support of BJP candidate Diganta Kalita, Nabin alleged that Congress had worked in the interest of infiltrators.

“The Congress government allowed infiltration for vote bank politics, and during its tenure, women and land were not safe. The past 10 years, however, have been a period of development in Assam, and voters should remember the earlier phase while casting their votes,” he said.

He further expressed confidence that the BJP-led NDA would return to power for a third consecutive term under Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

The national president also claimed that during the Congress rule, infiltration was encouraged for vote bank politics and alleged that women and land were not safe at the time. In contrast, he said, the BJP government had acted against infiltrators and initiated development works across the state.

Recalling his visits to the state since 2009-10, he claimed that development was not a topic of discussion then and that concerns over violence and unrest dominated public discourse.

He reiterated that the BJP was confident of forming the next government in the state under Sarma’s leadership.
