GMC Imposes ₹50,000 Fine on Household for Dumping Waste into Basistha River

The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) has imposed a penalty of Rs. 50,000 on a household in Sijubari, Ward 42, for discharging waste directly into the Basistha River.

GUWAHATI: The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) has imposed a penalty of Rs. 50,000 on a household in Sijubari, Ward 42, for discharging waste directly into the Basistha River.

During a surprise inspection conducted by the Deputy Enforcement Officer in collaboration with division five officials, the household was found dumping boring materials into the river. The illegal activity was halted immediately, and the discharge point was sealed on the spot.

In its social media handle, GMC shared details of the action, stating, "A household in Sijubari, Ward 42, was found discharging boring materials directly into the Basistha River. The activity was promptly sealed during a drive by the Deputy Enforcement Officer and Division 5 officials. A penalty of Rs. 50,000 was imposed for causing environmental pollution and hazardous discharge into the river."

Environmental activists and local residents have lauded the GMC's prompt action and called for sustained vigilance to protect the Basistha River and other water bodies in the region.
