Guwahati: City police begin citizen-centric policing on a positive note

GUWAHATI: Joint Commissioner of Police Ankur Jain said that due to cooperation from the conscious citizens, the number of drink-and-drive cases on December 31, 2024, came down to 94 only.

The Joint Commissioner further said that city police started its efforts to provide citizen-centric policing with success in January 2025.

According to him, in January this year, the City Police delivered 57 Form 54 to the families of accident victims, completed the verification of 1,673 passports, and 2,389 police verification reports were completed and delivered.

On sanitation and public welfare initiatives, the city police conducted 47 cleanliness drives with the participation of citizens and nagarik committees, besides removing 82 abandoned vehicles from public streets and relocating them to secure locations, he said. The city police received 653 complaints on the special WhatsApp number of the Police Commissionerate, Guwahati. “Out of that, 185 cases were police-related, of which 96 cases were successfully resolved, and the complainants were informed. The remaining complaints pertained to other departments,” he said.

On the road safety front, the police caught 28 persons, including seven juveniles, performing bike stunts and seized 23 modified bikes. The police also took action against them under the Motor Vehicles Act.  The city police traced 169 lost or stolen mobile phones and returned 157 to their genuine owners. The police also traced 47 missing persons.

 The city police recovered 51 stolen vehicles, besides removing 185 abandoned and unclaimed vehicles to secure locations to clear public spaces.

During the month, the police registered 37 cases under the NDPS Act, leading to the arrest of 52 accused. Significant seizures were made, including 686.64 grams of heroin, 43.469 kg of ganja, 29,162 illicit tablets, and cough syrups worth Rs 6.75 crore.
