Guwahati: A huge amount of plastic waste and garbage was caught in one of the Guwahati Municipal Corporation’s (GMC) garbage traps in the Bharalu River, highlighting the persistent issue of pollution in the city’s water bodies.
Officials from GMC stated that while they are working to clean up the rivers and drains, public awareness and cooperation are crucial. The corporation has urged citizens not to dump waste into water bodies and to contribute to keeping Bharalu and Bahini rivers clean.
“We appeal to all residents to be responsible and dispose of waste properly. These water bodies are vital for the city’s drainage system, and pollution only worsens flooding and environmental hazards,” a GMC official said.
The Bharalu River, one of Guwahati’s key drainage channels, often bears the brunt of unregulated waste disposal, with plastics and other pollutants choking its flow. Environmental activists have repeatedly called for stricter waste management measures and public participation in conservation efforts. GMC has assured that clean-up drives will continue but emphasized that sustainable change can only come through collective action.
