GUWAHATI: With a view to resolving the waste disposal and water-logging problems faced by the residents, the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) is implementing the concept of Waste Segregation and carry out de-siltation drives in the city.
According to the waste segregation plan, every household has to use two dustbins to segregate wet and solid waste. Wet waste means waste materials which include kitchen waste, including vegetable and tea leaves, coffee grounds, eggshells, bones and entrails, fish scales, as well as cooked food etc. On the other hand, dry waste includes anything that can be kept for an extended period without decomposing. Paper, plastics, metal, glass, rubber, fabric, leather, wood, etc., are examples of dry waste.
After three months of implementing the waste segregation plan, GMC will collect the wet waste for five days and dry waste for two days of the week.
The GMC will also establish a scientifically developed garbage disposal plant with modern technology. This plant will hold the future of the city's garbage disposal strategy and cleanliness.
At the same time, de-siltation drives are being carried out in certain areas of the city every day since January 1. Maniram Dewan Road, Chandmari and other areas have been cleaned with the help of the GMC's frontline workers and high- powered super sucker machines and a huge amount of garbage and waste materials have been removed from the city's drains and water bodies.
The GMC authorities have appealed to every citizen to cooperate in this cleanliness drive and make prudent choices while disposing off any waste materials.
