GUWAHATI: Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) councillor Sasanka Jyoti Deka, who won from Ward No. 38 on a BJP ticket in the recent election, resigned from the party after the announcement of the Mayor's name on Tuesday.
Sasanka Deka left the councillors' meeting after the names of the Mayor and Deputy Mayor were announced.
Deka had joined the BJP in 1993.
Moreover, West Guwahati MLA from the AGP Ramendra Narayan Kalita also expressed dissatisfaction over the decision to appoint Mrigen Sarania as Mayor and Smita Roy as Deputy Mayor, both from the BJP.
Speaking to the media, Kalita said that they wanted the Deputy Mayor to be named from the AGP. "We would have been happy if the Deputy Mayor would have been selected from AGP. They have chosen a candidate from the BJP as their numbers are more. As we are an alliance partner, the seats have been divided with mutual understanding. We will have to make the party more powerful, Kalita said."
