GUWAHATI: Citizens across Guwahati are grappling with frequent power outages and growing difficulties with the mandatory online electricity bill payment system, sparking widespread concern and discontent.
Residents report that power cuts have become a near-daily occurrence, particularly in the mornings, with outages ranging from a few minutes to over an hour. The situation is especially troubling during the ongoing summer heat, affecting daily chores and overall living comfort. “There has been no improvement from last year. The situation remains the same,” said a resident from Panjabari. Many others echoed similar frustrations, saying the irregular power supply has made basic activities like cooking and household work increasingly difficult.
Further compounding the issue is the shift to online-only bill payments, which has proven challenging for many, particularly senior citizens, those without digital literacy, and members of economically weaker sections. “If the unpaid bill amount exceeds Rs 300, the power is cut off—which is very difficult for the poor,” said one local resident.
