Guwahati: In a concerted effort to combat seasonal outbreaks of diarrhea, the “Diarrhoea Prevention Campaign” was formally launched in the Kamrup (M) on Thursday, aligning with the statewide initiative. The campaign, which will continue until August 25, was inaugurated at the Satgaon State Ayushman Arogya Mandir by Dr. Manoj Choudhury, Executive Director of the National Health Mission (NHM), Assam.

Aimed at curbing the rise in diarrhoea cases typically seen during June and July, the campaign’s key objective is to ensure zero child deaths due to the illness. It emphasizes awareness generation among parents, guardians, and children, especially in Anganwadi centres and schools, focusing on hygiene practices like proper handwashing, use of toilets, and consumption of safe drinking water.

As part of the initiative, all children aged 0–5 years in the district will receive ORS (Oral Rehydration Salts) and Zinc tablets. ASHA workers will conduct door-to-door visits to distribute the supplements and sensitize families on diarrhea prevention.

The inaugural event saw the presence of NHM Assam’s Officer on Special Duty Lakhimi Dutta, Joint Director of Health Services (Kamrup Metro) Dr. Apurba Krishna Sharma, Mayor-in-Council Asim Saikia, Capital Block in-charge Medical Officer Dr. Parashree Choudhury, and others. Also in attendance were officials from the Social Welfare, Education, and Public Health Engineering departments, hospital staff, and NHM representatives from state, district, and block levels.
