Rajya Sabha poll: BJP and AGP to field a candidate each

The BJP and the AGP will field a candidate each for the two Rajya Sabha seats of the state that are going to poll on June 19, 2025.

Guwahati: The BJP and the AGP will field a candidate each for the two Rajya Sabha seats of the state that are going to poll on June 19, 2025.

A crucial meeting between the BJP and AGP was held today at the state BJP headquarters, Atal Bihari Vajpayee Bhawan. The meeting was attended, among others, by the Chief Minister of Assam, Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma; State BJP president Dilip Saikia; AGP president Atul Bora; AGP working president Keshab Mahanta; and senior AGP leader and MP Phani Bhushan Choudhury.

In the meeting, there was an in-depth discussion regarding the two vacant Rajya Sabha seats.

According to a statement issued by the BJP, it was decided that, in line with the spirit of alliance, AGP will contest the seat it previously held, and BJP will contest the seat it had previously represented.

The two Rajya Sabha seats will fall vacant on June 14 with the expiry of the terms of Mission Ranjan Das of the BJP and Birendra Prasad of the AGP.

It was further informed in the statement that a three-member candidate list for the BJP seat will be prepared and forwarded to the National Committee during the State Election Committee meeting scheduled on June 3.

On the other hand, the AGP will decide its candidate independently.
The meeting also resolved to work together in a united manner to reach out to the public and play a strong political role in Assam’s future landscape.

Additionally, comprehensive discussions were held on strategies for various upcoming elections.
