Guwahati: Guwahati Mayor Mrigen Sarania handed over Rs 1.20 lakh each to four families whose houses suffered severe damage due to a pipe burst at Kharghuli in Guwahati on Thursday.
The incident was caused by a pressure surge during preparations for the installation of surge protection tanks at the Kharguli Water Treatment Plant (WTP), leaving the affected families grappling with extensive property damage.
The compensation, totalling Rs 4,80,000, was sanctioned under the JICA-assisted Guwahati Water Supply Project (GWSP). The district administration classified the homes of the recipients-Anowar Hussain, Abu Fateh Ahmed, Moumin Seikh, and Binita Das-as "severely damaged."
The compensation has been approved under Section 80 of the Guwahati Metropolitan Drinking Water & Sewerage Board Act, 2009, which grants the board the authority to provide financial assistance for damage caused by its activities.
Mayor Sarania assured the affected families of further support and highlighted the city administration's commitment to mitigating the impact of such incidents in the future. The incident has raised questions about safety protocols during the implementation of the water supply project, prompting local authorities to initiate further investigations. Meanwhile, repair and restoration efforts are underway to assist those impacted.
