GUWAHATI: State Education Minister Dr. Ranoj Pegu reaffirmed that the government would go ahead with the appointment of 50 percent of retired teachers in the state’s newly opened model degree colleges that suffer due to the lack of experienced teachers.

The Department of Technical Education, Assam, today inaugurated a two-day induction training programme for newly appointed assistant professors of state engineering colleges. The programme is being held at the Assam Administrative Staff College, with Education Minister Dr. Ranoj Pegu gracing the inaugural event.

Addressing the gathering, Dr. Pegu emphasized the transformative role of educators in shaping the future of students in the 21st century. “Every teacher must go beyond textbooks and inspire students with 21st-century skills and practical knowledge. Only then can we prepare our students for global challenges,” he said.

Dr. Pegu noted that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India is progressing towards becoming a “Viksit Bharat” (Developed India), aiming to regain its status as a global knowledge leader. In this context, he said, the responsibility of engineering educators has become even more significant.

He encouraged faculty to not only focus on academic degrees but also instill innovative thinking, practical skills, and problem-solving abilities in students. “We must transform our engineering colleges into hubs of innovation, incubation, and start-ups,” he added.

Highlighting the importance of the National Education Policy (NEP), Dr. Pegu urged teachers to move beyond conventional departmental boundaries and embrace interdisciplinary and holistic teaching approaches. He also lauded the efforts of Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma in enabling large-scale faculty recruitment in technical institutions across the state.

Since May 2021, a total of 239 assistant professors (technical and non-technical) have been appointed in engineering colleges, and 371 assistant professors in polytechnic institutes. Dr. Pegu described this as a milestone in strengthening higher and technical education in Assam.

He also cited the Advantage Assam 2.0 initiative as a successful effort by the state to attract global attention, aiming to position Assam as a contributor to India’s economic and technological progress, rather than a dependent state.
