ITANAGAR: In a high-stakes operation, the Itanagar Capital Police apprehended a notorious narcotics trafficker after an armed confrontation on Saturday.

The accused, identified as Rohit (alias Ruhit) Basumatary, was intercepted following a brief but intense exchange of gunfire with police personnel. The operation resulted in the seizure of contraband substances and an illegally possessed firearm.

SP Capital, Rohit Rajbir Singh, informed the media that police acted on credible intelligence regarding narcotics movement in the Capital region. A blue Renault vehicle (registration number xx29) was identified and intercepted around 6:15 PM at a checkpoint. However, the suspect attempted to flee, eventually crashing his vehicle.

Upon exiting the vehicle, the suspect opened fire on the police team. In response, officers, led by SDPO Capital Kengo Dirchi, exercised restraint and returned fire professionally. The confrontation ended when the suspect was immobilized with a non-lethal shot to the leg, ensuring his capture without casualties to police personnel or civilians.

A search of the vehicle, conducted in the presence of magistrates and independent witnesses, led to the recovery of approximately 12 grams of suspected heroin concealed in a green soap box near the spare tire. Additionally, a sophisticated firearm marked “MADE IN USA,” along with six live rounds, was seized, highlighting the suspect’s preparedness and aggression.

The accused was taken to R.K. Mission Hospital under police escort for treatment. Sub-Inspector Tamo Bakhang sustained chest abrasions from bullet impact, while Assistant Sub-Inspector Manish suffered multiple abrasions during a physical altercation with the suspect.

SP Singh confirmed that the accused has a long criminal record in both Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, with past offenses involving robbery, illegal arms possession, and narcotics trafficking. A case has been registered at Chimpu Police Station, and a special team led by Inspector Rina Sonam is investigating further legal proceedings.

The Capital Police have reiterated their firm stance against drug peddlers, warning that any attempts to spread narcotics will be met with swift and decisive action.

“Our response will be relentless. Those endangering our youth through the drug trade will be pursued, confronted, and brought to justice with the full force of the law,” SP Singh asserted.
