ITANAGAR: In a major push for organic and cash crop cultivation, Tawang MLA Namgey Tsering Sunday distributed hybrid vegetable seeds and organic liquid manure to local farmers at an event organised by the district agriculture office.

The initiative, funded under the MLA local area development (LAD) fund for 2024-25, aims to boost agricultural productivity and farmer incomes.

Addressing the event, Tsering encouraged farmers to expand vegetable cultivation while emphasising organic farming practices. He urged them to reduce chemical fertilizer and pesticide use, highlighting the ready market available through army and paramilitary forces for locally grown produce.

The law maker also announced an upcoming cold storage facility to help farmers preserve surplus harvests and minimise post-harvest losses.

Tawang deputy commissioner Kanki Darang reaffirmed the administration's commitment to supporting farmers, mentioning ongoing coordination with the agriculture department and security forces for direct vegetable procurement from local growers.

He clarified that while seeds and manure were procured earlier under the MLA LAD fund, their distribution was postponed due to the Lossar festival.

The event saw participation from senior officials, public leaders, panchayat representatives, and farmers.

District agriculture officer Toli Bam and entomologist K B Kayastha appreciated the MLA's efforts in promoting sustainable agriculture, while agriculture development officer Tashi Lungtan encouraged farmers to engage in training programmes to enhance productivity.

A technical session was also held, where Kayastha trained farmers on scientific vegetable cultivation methods.

Subject Matter Specialist (Plant Protection) from KVK Tawang, Lakshmipriya Borah, demonstrated seed treatment techniques to prevent seed-borne diseases.
